Department of International Law and Comparative Law

Education at the Department of International Law and Comparative Law is carried out professional program of bachelor and master degree in specialty International law.

Department of International Law and Comparative Law has been functioning as a separate department of the Institute of International Relations since 1998. The teaching is provided by highly qualified doctors and candidates of Law, professors and associate professors.

Scientific work of the Department

The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department are working on research of the research topic: “Reforming the legal system of Ukraine in the context of national and international tendencies, building up the legal and social state” together with the Law Institute.

The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department developed their own teaching and methodological support of academic disciplines, as well as published courses of lectures in both Ukrainian and English. In particular, lectures were delivered: on international humanitarian law, private international law, public international law, international economic law; international space law; international maritime law, international air law, law of foreign relations, comparative civil process, law of international responsibility, state law of foreign countries, law of the World Trade Organization; tutorial: “Comparative Criminal Procedure”, “Law of International Organizations and Ukraine: in Schemes and Tables”; bilingual courses of lectures: "Labor Law", "History of International Law", "Fundamentals of European Union Law", "Private International Private Law", "International Economic Law"; textbook "International Public Law"; Encyclopedia "Small Encyclopedia of International Law".

In addition, students of the specialty "International law" have practical training in such institutions and government bodies like committees of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, Supreme Court of Ukraine, Council of Europe Information Centre in Ukraine, the International Red Cross, etc.

Due to well-organized practical training, KyIU students are constantly involved in various international competitions. KyIU teams overcome national barriers to participate in prestigious European and international competitions. Straight teams of international lawyers trained by our professors won prizes in the national and international rounds of such prestigious international student competitions as competition for international public law named after B. Telders and Competition named after Jessup.

  • 2000 - the victory of the team of the KyIU in the Contest on International Humanitarian Law. F. Martens (30 teams from CIS countries);
  • 2001 - the second place at the International Competition named after B. Telders;
  • 2003 - the team of the KyIU represented Ukraine in the most prestigious competition of International Humanitarian Law named after Jeanne Pikte (Athens, Greece);
  • 2007 - the second place in the Contest on International Humanitarian Law. F. Martens (Warsaw, Poland);
  • 2008 - the first place in the national round of the Competition named B. Telders and participation in the international round (The Hague, The Netherlands);
  • 2009 - the first place in the national round of the Competition named F. Jessup and participation in the international round (Washington, D.C.);
  • 2010 - the eighth place among 27 educational institutions of the world in the international round Competition named after B. Telders (The Hague, The Netherlands);
  • 2011 - the third place in the Contest on International Humanitarian Law. F. Martens (Moscow, Russia);
  • 2012 - the second place at the International Competition named after B. Telders (Odessa, Ukraine);
  • 2015 - the second place at the International Competition named after B. Telders (Kyiv, Ukraine);
  • 2017 - the second place at the International Competition named after B. Telders (Kyiv, Ukraine);
  • 2018 - the second place at the International Competition named after B. Telders (Lviv, Ukraine);
  • 2019 - the third place at the International Competition named after B. Telders (Kyiv, Ukraine).
